The nearest international airport to Lake Como is Milan Malpensa. You can easily spend two days in Milan before or after visiting Lake Como, or make it part of a larger Northern Italy itinerary. You can take a train from Milan to the town of Como, on the southwestern portion of the lake in under one hour.

But cost may be a factor, you will spend alot more in Venice for lodging and eating, if you do not need air cond. your chance of finding a place for under $200USD per night is more doable.
Lake Como is a lake in northern Italy, about 50 miles north of Milan and very close to the Swiss border. The largest town on Lake Como is the eponymous Como, at the southern end of the lake.
From Milan to Lake Maggiore. The easiest way to visit Lake Maggiore is from Northern Italy. Trains depart Milan’s Centrale station and take roughly 1 hour to reach Maggiore. Something I’ve done once was to take the train early to Varenna, walk around, then boat to Bellagio, walk around and see Villa Melzi, then boat to Como and train back to Milan. It was a long full day, but totally feasible and allowed my friend to see a lot of Como Lake in one day.
